Can you explain the reasoning for the latest farm bill? It seems like 1.5 Million is too much income to receive subsidies. Is this just politics as usual or is there a solid reason that can't be explained in a sound bite? Is so, point me to a web page. More

Why can sitting senators virtually abandon their "day jobs" to run for President for more than a year? I assume they're getting paid normal salaries during this time. Why aren't you responsible for being in your office, or being on the Senate floor for debates or votes. Where is the obligation to represent your constituents? More

  • Question:

Physical restraint and seclusion time-outs are being used on students with disabilities in Virginia public school systems. Why is there not a law out there to govern these inhumane practices? Why is the school system allowed to abuse our children with disabilities?

Asked by: Priscilla Greene from Chesterfield, VA. Received 18 Votes.
    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA)

I just haven’t had anybody raise that to us, so we’ll be glad to look into that and see.

Well, the current law does allow sitting Senators to run for another political office- namely President. In my state, in many instances if you decide to run for another office you have to quit your current office. So Congress could change the law, I presume, to allow that. We’d have to have some constitutional scholars tell us if whether constitutionally that’s enforceable or not.

  • Question:

Currently there is a lot of discussion on both immigration and military strength. Rather than focus on building walls, why aren't we building recruiting stations on the border with Mexico? It seems like an obvious solution, if a family wants to come to this country then at least one member that family joins a US military branch.

Asked by: Gabriel Whalen from Fort Belvoir, VA. Received 1 Vote.

    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Charles Gonzalez (D-TX)

Well, which is really interesting, because you already have many non-citizens serving today. I believe the first soldier who died in Iraq was a non-citizen, someone that illegally immigrated to California, he was an orphan and then joined the Marines and died. I know that we have non-citizens from San Antonio that have died, because actually their funerals took place in Mexico. So you already have that going on to be honest with you. But, no, I don’t think that’s going to be one of these solutions- that if you want to come over here, you join our armed services.

  • Question:

Why are planes allowed to fly into and out of Reagan National Airport before 6am and after 11pm? And when was the last one fined for breaking the curfew?

Asked by: Robert Shutler from Arlington, VA. Received 4 Votes.
    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-VA)

They are only the new jet engines that don’t create noise. It’s based upon a noise level and if they can prove they don’t go over the noise decibel level they are allowed to fly, otherwise the curfew applies. That’s the answer. We got some new jets . . . We are trying to encourage them, that’s the incentive for airlines to make new jets that don’t make noise.

  • Question:

Why aren't any candidates or elected officials for that matter exploring the possibilities of geothermal heat exchange given the crisis of energy we now face?

Asked by: Jeff Elder from Alexandria, VA. Received 19 Votes.
Categories: Energy · Environment · Foreign Policy.
    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR)

Geothermal will play a greater role. The question is how much and how soon? We are dramatically shifting investment over the next three years into renewable energy supplies for the future and geothermal is nearly inexhaustible. And is one where there are more applications than people think and it needs to be a part of a diverse portfolio.”

  • Question:

Republicans talk about fiscal responsibility and Congressional oversight often these days. When they were the majority the national debt soared to 9 trillion and oversight was nonexistent. How do they reconcile the apparent contradiction?

Asked by: srd from Arlington, VA. Received 25 Votes.
    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX)

Honesty is the best policy. I think we did spend too much. By cutting taxes we were raising revenue to the federal treasury and bringing down the deficit. In the last year, we did have a big budget showdown over increasing taxes and spending. Through the power of the veto out of the White House we were able to sustain these vetoes, and we were able to stop these enormous tax increases and spending. That was a victory. We had a bit of a wakeup call last election. We understood what our republican voters want from us. They want more fiscal discipline. They want us to stop the pork spending.

Government should be efficient, should be effective and accountable to the people. The debt is the largest that we’ve ever had in our history, its over nine trillion dollars. We need rules like pay-go, pay as you go.

Democrat or republican in most cases people want to get dollars in the hands of people who want to go to college or community college. I know in Pennsylvania, they are a central cog in the wheel to building a skilled workforce. It’s remarkable what’s happening right now. We’ve got to make sure we invest in community colleges because it’s a sector of our economy that’s been neglected and it’s a sector of our economy that’s essential whether or not we can compete in a world economy and community colleges play a huge role in that.
