HHS is redefining abortion as any method which prevents or deters contraception as well as aborting a fetus. Considering the financial implication on social services, medical ramifications including STD’s, and population growth, what is your stand on this? More

Over withhold on your taxes & you can get an interest free refund and that's like giving the government an interest free loan. Why, if you under withhold, pay up any balance due when you file on time-- you will still be charged interest on the amount under withheld? Note, Maryland's interest rate is about twice that of the IRS rate-- why? More

Considering the displeasure reportedly voiced by congressionals about Fannie and Freddie golden parachutes for their CEO's when will the elected officials of the government go on Social Security and give up their golden parachutes? Bet Social Security would get fixed last week if this happened

I want to know why congress does not eliminate the social security wage base ceiling, which is $102,000.00 for 2008. Social Security is a social insurnce program. It is not a personal savings program. By making this one change Congress coud "fix" the social security issue. This would make the program fair and equal for everyone.

I guess I need to really look at that. That’s an interesting idea. I’m not gonna respond to that until I see whether there is any efficacy to what the person is saying, but that’s an interesting idea. I am convinced that one of the things that is necessary with social security is to make sure we stop raiding the fund first of all. And secondarily we need to allow people some flexibility, because there are only three ways to affect the ultimate pay out. That is either pay more in, or take less out, or do something different with the investment mechanism of what’s put in.

Will you support the FAIR TAX proposal that taxes consumption instead of income and provides a prebate to individuals earning less than the poverty level?
Asked by: Dennis Brower from Queensbury, NY. Received 8 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN)
The Fair Tax to me is interesting because it really encourages savings and investment and only taxes you on what you consume. The issue that is difficult is how you get from here to there. I mean we have people all across our country that deduct home mortgages, that stimulated obviously people buying and affording homes. So there are a number of components that I think need to be looked at in detail. But in general, in our state, the state of Tennessee, has something similar. I mean we have a sales tax in Tennessee, we don not have an income tax, our citizens like that.

Congestion, sprawl, schools, health care, crime, pollution, affordable housing, diminishing resources, wages, tax burdens, are all result of unconstrained immigration. How would more people chasing fewer resources address these problems?

You may see immigration reform come through in pieces. I think we’re going to have to have a legal channel to meet the demands for labor in this country. At the same time security at the border is important. We share this border, we share the problem and we share the responsibility of securing the border on both sides.

The first thing is we do have to have border security. The right type of border security; Will that stimulate the economy building the fence?...I’m against the fence. If you’ve going to spend $3 million a mile there are other ways, using technology, getting rid of the Carrizo, the plants that grow so high that border patrol can’t do their jobs. Our economy does depend on people doing certain type of jobs. I would say first, give them to the Americans, but if you have ag products or construction or hotel industry jobs that people don’t want to do those jobs, let someone else do it.

We not only have a right we have a responsibility that American immigration is not first good for America and second good for the immigrant. Usually it’s good for both. There is a legitimate argument that I don’t think people talk about. Every community is concerned about how many people are moving in and the impact on roads and everything else. These are the kind of open and frank discussions that we should encourage without being attacked for the dialog and going back and forth.

Independent studies show both parties receive huge amounts of money from the lobby groups and the winners allegiance will be to multinational corporations. How can the public benefit from an election if the lobbyists are not eliminated?
Asked by: Ernest Paviour from . Received 1 Vote.
Listen to: U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD)
Well, I think that we do need to reduce the influence of lobbyist on the electoral process and on the hill, in terms of increasing transparency, prohibiting lobbyist from winning and dining members of Congress, reducing travel. Common Cause, Public Interest, other groups, other public watch dog groups, hailed it as a landmark piece of legislation. It dramatically limits the influence of lobbyist in terms of their winning and dining of legislators, no traveling with lobbyist. It sets up some very important firewalls in the process.

How important is passing an appropriations bill for the operation in Iraq?
Asked by: districtline from Washington, DC. Received 12 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Sen. John W. Warner (R-VA)
We desperately need to get funding to the military such that they don’t lose a step. Because they are succeeding in the goals laid down militarily, not politically, but that’s not their responsibility. – excuse me let me finish. So we don’t want them to lose a step, but clearly the future course of this operation in Iraq we have to revisit where the political structure is or is not.

Why do legislators always wait till the end of the year to appropriate tax dollars?
Asked by: elvin from Boston, MA. Received 16 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT)
This last year was the worst year I have ever seen for pushing things off to the end. And part of it was an effort on the part of leadership to attach non-germaine issues that were very controversial to pieces of legislation that were not controversial. So I really think it was a lack of organization this past year.
