HHS is redefining abortion as any method which prevents or deters contraception as well as aborting a fetus. Considering the financial implication on social services, medical ramifications including STD’s, and population growth, what is your stand on this? More

Over withhold on your taxes & you can get an interest free refund and that's like giving the government an interest free loan. Why, if you under withhold, pay up any balance due when you file on time-- you will still be charged interest on the amount under withheld? Note, Maryland's interest rate is about twice that of the IRS rate-- why? More

I thought that whenever an industry was making higher profits, other entrepreneurial companies would enter that industry. In the wake of Exxon's record profits, why are there no new companies entering this industry and competing? Wouldn't competition help? What can or should the government do to help increase competition? More

Our committee has three goals and this is what we have been trying to accomplish: protecting taxpayer’s dollars from waste, fraud and abuse and making sure government works for the people third holding the government of this country accountable for their actions that’s what we have been trying to do in 2007 and 2008 during the time I have been chairman of that committee.

When will the federal government begin to get honest with the American people about the issue of peak oil?
Asked by: goat from Brooklyn, NY. Received 33 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE)
The discussion about whether we hit peak oil I think drives some of the discussion about whether or how quickly we move away from oil as the major use of our energy. It’s kind of like global warming was a few years ago. People talk about peak oil, but there’s no evidence that we’ve hit peak oil, some people think it’s right now. So it’s part of their discussions.

Should the federal government require schools to teach nutrition?
Asked by: goat from Brooklyn, NY. Received 13 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
Nutrition education we already do within health classes. When my kids were in kindergarten or 1st Grade, and how many grains and how many dairies, so nutrition education, yes. One of the other questions to be asked is, is it the federal government’s role to tell schools what they should be doing within the choices that are available within a school. We need to keep in mind that within the past 40 some-odd years, we’ve been doing that within the school lunch program. We have set the standards within school lunches and we say there are standards that need to be met.

Should the federal government require schools to teach nutrition?
Asked by: goat from Brooklyn, NY. Received 13 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA)
Well first of all, it’s not up the federal government to mandate what schools teach. I would never want to intrude on the local jurisdiction of schools to decide who they hire, who the fire, what books use. That’s not the role of the federal government. But I do think the role of the federal government is, as long as we’re providing school lunches and school breakfasts and food in schools, that we ought to be able to say what foods would be allowed in those schools.

Would you be willing to put limits on usurious rates being charged by credit card companies in order to stimulate consumer spending?
Asked by: Kurt Christensen from Westminster, MD. Received 1 Vote.
Listen to: U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)
When I was in the House, I was on the financial services committee. And the answer to your question is yes, and we’re working on that legislation. Right now because of the collapse of the middle class and the increase of poverty, you’re finding large numbers of American families who when they go to the grocery story, are buying groceries on a credit card. And despite the fact they are paying their bills every single month, the credit card companies are charging them 25, 28 percent interest rate. That is absolutely outrageous and a rip-off that cannot be tolerated.

Do Think Everyone Should Be Taxed for all the Carbon emissions we make or Do you think That only big Corporations that emit a lot of Carbon dioxide should be the only ones Taxed for Carbon Use?
Asked by: John Hawkins from Provo, UT. Received 13 Votes.

Either way it gets passed down to the consumer. It has to be part of the discussion of global warming Its far from being resolved whether its going to be Warner-Lieberman or some other version. We’ll see a debate on global warming but I don’t think we’re going to get across the finish line with any particular package this year. ….We need to be concerned about what it will do to the American economy and make sure that we’re taking that into account while we deal with one of the perils of the planet. We need a workable plan to deal with global warming and the release of CO2.

Republicans talk about fiscal responsibility and Congressional oversight often these days. When they were the majority the national debt soared to 9 trillion and oversight was nonexistent. How do they reconcile the apparent contradiction?
Asked by: srd from Arlington, VA. Received 25 Votes.

Honesty is the best policy. I think we did spend too much. By cutting taxes we were raising revenue to the federal treasury and bringing down the deficit. In the last year, we did have a big budget showdown over increasing taxes and spending. Through the power of the veto out of the White House we were able to sustain these vetoes, and we were able to stop these enormous tax increases and spending. That was a victory. We had a bit of a wakeup call last election. We understood what our republican voters want from us. They want more fiscal discipline. They want us to stop the pork spending.

Congestion, sprawl, schools, health care, crime, pollution, affordable housing, diminishing resources, wages, tax burdens, are all result of unconstrained immigration. How would more people chasing fewer resources address these problems?
Asked by: Ed Weirdness from Mesquite, TX. Received 1 Vote.
Listen to: U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX)
You may see immigration reform come through in pieces. I think we’re going to have to have a legal channel to meet the demands for labor in this country. At the same time security at the border is important. We share this border, we share the problem and we share the responsibility of securing the border on both sides.
