Obama Urged to Repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has been used to remove over 250 gay and lesbian service members since President Obama took office, and that has lawmakers up in arms. This week 76 Democrats and 1 Republican House member sent a letter to the president, urging him to carry through with his campaign promise to end the Clinton-era law.
In the letter, lawmakers urged the president to command military leaders to disregard “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” which they say would serve as a signal to congressional leaders to repeal the law.
It's interesting how the letter, penned by Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida, asks the president to disregard a law passed by legislative branch:
"We urge you to exercise the maximum discretion legally possible in administering Don't Ask, Don't Tell until Congress repeals the law. To this end, we ask that you direct the Armed Services not to initiate any investigation of service personnel to determine their sexual orientation, and that you instruct them to disregard third party accusations that do not allege violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. That is, we request that you impose that no one is asked and that you ignore, as the law requires, third parties who tell."
If the lawmakers are that serious about repeal, maybe they should move first and force President Obama to sign their bill. That's usually how things work in the Capitol, eh?
